Looking out my window, I enjoy watching the hawks that soar and glide the air currents. Not so long ago, I had the pleasure of gliding over the tarmac in a Swedish Saab. Built for high end performance, comfort and safety, Saabs often obliterate their rivals when it comes to ownership satisfaction and pleasure.
Saab is not only involved with designing and building some of the safest aircraft in the world; they are also highly competent truck and automobile engineers. Very solid, the Saab 93 Sport Sedan offers a sturdy five-seater design that boasts class leading safety results via some very hefty crash testing procedures. Weighing in at around 1500 kg the sedan feels superbly built.
The Saab 93 Sport Sedan comes in a variety of models that are built around six engines – no less. The petrol motors are very responsive, particularly when around 80-120 km/h and when overtaking requires the least time spent in the oncoming traffic’s lane. A 2.0t petrol unit boasts129 kW. A 2.0T petrol unit boasts154 kW. A 2.8 V6 Turbo petrol unit boasts 188 kW. A 2.0t BioPower unit boasts 147 kW. A 1.9TiD unit boasts110 kW. And a 1.9TTiD unit throws out 132 kW of power. In case you haven’t noticed, the last two engines are diesel motors. The BioPower model runs on a combination of ethanol and petrol. All models have a front wheel drive set up. And, depending on the model, the front wheel drive system is linked to a either a manual six-speed gearbox, a five-speed automatic Sentronic gearbox, a five-speed automatic transmission with Saab Sentronic manual selection (steering wheel buttons standard on Vector) or a Sentronic six-speed automatic transmission with Saab’s Sentronic manual selection via the steering wheel buttons. Saab’s leading turbo technology makes these engines very torquey, smooth and lusty power plants. The higher output engines can easily run past 230 km/h no problems.
Sleekly designed, the Saab 93 Sport Sedan has eye catching, uniquely swept lines that distinctly make it recognizable from other vehicles on the road. The Swedish style is breathtaking, and alloy wheels, powerful Bi-Xenon headlights, sporty colour coded wing mirrors and low profile tyres look stunning on all models. The HOT PACK is available on the Aero model, and boasts such goodies like: 18 inch V-Spoke alloy wheels, an electric sunroof and Bi-xenon cornering headlamps. The VISION PACK available on the Linear and Linear Sport models boasts Bi-Xenon headlamps, headlamp washers, auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, electronic folding mirrors and Saab’s park assist. The exterior lines not only look good, but they allow for a roomy cabin that can seat adults with long legs in reasonable comfort. The seats are outstanding in comfort and support, and the interior is stunning. There is loads of premium Swedish craftsmanship prevalent in the Saab 93 Sport Sedan leather appointed interiors. The amount of leather used depends on the model and tastes of the owner. The use of chrome trimming and high-end interior materials make the Saab 93 Sport Sedan’s interior sensational. The dash is sweeping and smooth, and for the driver, the important switchgear is situated in real cockpit fashion and the ergonomic detailing is excellent. Features include a multi-function steering wheel, air conditioning, electronically adjustable front seats with memory, cruise control, crash sensitive head rests front and rear, and three point safety seatbelts front and rear. A standard premium Bluetooth enabled phone with infotainment system is available on all models. This automatically connects to the net. The system also allows you to operate the phone with the buttons on the steering wheel or by voice control. A telephone holder in the centre console compartment makes for easy phone storage. The communications system connects your phone to the exterior antenna and charges it while on the road. A mobile phone cradle is available as an accessory. Awesome sounding stereos are standard across the range, and all audio systems can make your belly wobble when turned right up.
On the road, the Saab 93 Sport Sedan is very firmly planted. A very capable chassis keeps the 93 Sedan balanced under hard cornering and the light steering control is also speed sensitive – ensuring that at very high speeds the steering remains well weighted and meaty.
There are twelve stunning exterior colours – Laser Red being my favourite.
