The Mitsubishi 380 (now called the Mitsubishi 380 Series III) targets both the high performance and the family car segments. The Mitsubishi 380 Series III is aimed to compete against the rear-wheel drive Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon. The huge slash in prices of the cars in this Mitsubishi series and the new developments Mitsubishi has placed inside the sleek 380 make this car a worthy contender in the large-sedan segment.
The Mitsubishi 380 Series III comes in four trim levels: 380 ES, 380 SX, 380 VRX and the 380 GT. All models have the very powerful and smooth 3.8L V6 SOHC 24-valve engine delivering 175 kW @ 5250 rpm of power and 343Nm @ 4000 rpm of torque. Each version is therefore capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h in around 7.5 seconds. Passing slow vehicles is a breeze, with the 80-100 km/h bracket dispatched in under three seconds. The big 380 is beautifully nimble on the open road, offering loads of grip and excitement. The sports-tuned suspension, on all but the ES model, is very well balanced and honestly poses problems for many other big sedans on the market.
All models are loaded with electrics, cabin comforts and entertainment. The 380 ES provides a nice combination of style and performance, looking pretty good with 16″ inch alloy wheels. It comes with a close ratio 5-speed manual transmission, but there is also an option of a silky 5 speed INVECS II Smart Logic automatic transmission. The 380 SX is the same as the ES, except being a little sportier looking – with a low front air dam and 17″ inch 6-spoke alloy wheels. The 380 GT is the true luxury car in the Mitsubishi 380 range. A 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat, 6-way adjustable passenger seat and the option of an electric sunroof all make the big sedan a long distant tourer par excellence. Instead of just the six-speaker AM/FM CD MP3 compatible premium sound sytem that is in all the other models, the GT model has 8 speakers. All of the models enjoy an on board computer with sat-nav and a DVD player – not bad, eh! In the GT, you can sit back and enjoy the Multi-Function centre display with a Bluetooth hands-free system. The 380 VRX is the true sports model in the Mitsubishi 380 Series III range of cars. It comes with 17″ 8-spoke alloy wheels that look stunning, and it combines the features of a sports and luxury car.
The Mitsubishi 380 Series III is a definite force to be reckoned with. If you are on the hunt for a large sedan that seats 5 large adults in comfort, style and class leading price and equipment levels, you best check this one out.
