What rocks in the all new Volkswagen Golf stable? The sexy body lines and angular appearance make the Volkswagen Golf 90TSI quite a racy base model for a start. At first glance you’ll recognise the familiar shape that has guaranteed the Golf’s iconic stature, however the sharper angles highlight a lower-sitting, slightly wider new Volkswagen Golf.
Sit yourself inside the supportive driver’s seat, and you will find the elegant dash design simple and very ergonomic. You will be looking through a specially laminated windscreen that reduces external noises. The fit and finish of the new Golf interior is nothing short of superb, and climb into the rear and leg room is a class leader. Plenty of goodies are inside the Volkswagen Golf 90TSI version. Perhaps the nicest item is the RCD310 audio system that has an auxiliary audio input socket for MP3 compatibility. Also, an illuminated, chilled and lockable glove box is a feature that will be enjoyed by all thirsty Golf occupants on a hot summer’s day. The convenient 60-40 split/folding rear seat and numerous storage spaces make the Golf a very practical family vehicle.
Jump back into the driver’s seat again and fire up Volkswagen’s direct injection petrol technology. This is quite some engine. It might be the base model, but the addition of turbo-technology has created a smooth 1.4 litre, 90 kW engine that packs a 200 Nm torque punch. The torquey power delivery is particularly evident when passing slower vehicles. And you’ll say the the ability of the 1.4 litre engine to run a 0-100 km/h time of just 9.5 seconds is quite astounding.
What’s she like to drive? Well, the engine is linked to either a six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed DSG transmission. The result is a delightfully brisk drive that has plenty of life and brisk acceleration. Sweeping through corners and applying the engine torque to the road for power-down time is great fun. The agile chassis copes very well with road undulations and hangs on tightly in fast cornering. The Volkswagen Golf 90TSI Trendline travels 100 kilometres on just 6.4 litres of petrol. When you drive with the DSG transmission the fuel consumption drops to an average of 6.2 litres/100 km.
The brand new Golf is a vehicle that has been designed with safety as a priority. In rigorous Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) crash rating tests, the Golf achieved a maximum five- star safety rating.
