I wonder what the initials GS means in the new FPV GS Supercharged. Grand Sports or Giant Slayer, maybe… The FPV GS Supercharged sedan carries on a Ford tradition that goes way back to 1969 when the first GS model was introduced. Powered by a supercharger, and charged with 315 kW, the current FPV GS Supercharged is a full-on performance car.
A distinctive rumble burbles from under the hood when the car is at rest. Sounds of thunder or a wild sea break forth when the throttle is opened out. V8 power means stacks of torque, and the FPV GS Supercharged effortlessly supplies this. Peaking with 545 Nm at 2000 rpm – all the way to 5500 rpm – the engine means business and is always ready and willing.
One of the king pins of muscle cars, you’ll find that the FPV GS Supercharged stacks on the speed very quickly. A 0-100 km/h sprint time in the mid-fives, a 0-400 meters time of around 13.5 seconds and a top speed of well in excess of 240 km/h, the FPV GS Supercharged is ready to rumble. You can put this sort of pace through two types of gearbox. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, then you’ll probably choose the six-speed Tremec manual gearbox. For those who appreciate refinement and ease of use – even when under the pump – the slick ZF 6-speed auto will be the tranny of choice, and at no extra cost.
Sling the car round a few corners and you quickly learn that the FPV GS Supercharged has a well sorted handling package. You could swear that someone has smeared adhesive to the tyres as the car corners without difficulty at speed. The steering feels superbly accurate, while the ride is firm and dynamic.
Muscle cars look a million bucks, and the FPV GS Supercharged sedan is no exception. Sitting on premium 19-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels in glossy Alpine Silver, the car’s shoes look hot for a start. Then there’s the bodywork: even the standard XT Ford Falcon body lines have a muscly elegance about them. Fill these lines out with a spoiler, unique GS stripe graphics with Boss 315 badging and add bi-modal quad exhausts to ardently announce the FPV GS Supercharged sedan has all the right credentials. Just fire up the engine, and the proof is in the pudding!
Long trips will be enjoyed by all inside the FPV GS Supercharged sedan. Yes, there is the swift performance to eat the miles away, but inside the FPV GS Supercharged cabin, the world is muted and relaxed. Thankfully, the V8 engine notes are tastefully audible – that’s part of the fun.
I’m amazed at the value for money. Really, this much grunt and this much enjoyment for under $60k beckons me to deliberate on just how overpriced the Euro equivalents – and some Jap model equivalents – are. Drive the new FPV GS Supercharged, and drivers will experience a whole new level of Human Machine Interface (HMI) design that boasts Bluetooth and iPod connectivity. A high-tech, easy-to-use Interior Command Centre (ICC) has a clear 8-inch colour touch screen that puts all the smart technology at the driver’s or front passenger’s fingertips. A reverse camera and reverse sensing system makes parking the big brute easy.
You are going to look good anywhere you care to take the FPV GS Supercharged sedan. Get used to it, the eyes are on you. Lovely bold shades of orange, black, red and green are ready to make a statement. Light and dark blues or silvers are available, too. Signature leather seats give you a picture of how nice sitting inside one of these will be.
Don’t need the back seats? Remember the same glorious engine note is offered in the FPV GS Supercharged ute.
