You’ve worked hard, and you feel you deserve a little extra in the form of creature comforts and style? Holden’s Commodore Luxury line-up boasts some splendid cars that tick all the boxes which refer to the highest luxury features and equipment available for the Commodore Luxury range. Calais and Calais V-Series are the two model names you’ll need to know about, and with these two versions there is enough luxury built into these cars for you to be immersed in sweet refinement up to one’s ears – but it won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Holden cars are a reasonably well priced package in comparison to some other marques, especially when you are considering buying large and buying luxury.
What the current Commodore Luxury range has is a striking body that looks bold and muscly, but also exudes an air of class and refinement. Holden Calais and Holden Calais V-Series cars have chrome body side mouldings. These help to distinguish the Luxury Commodores from the Sport and Comfort versions.
There are also one or two other features that the Commodore Luxury cars have. A rear lip spoiler, dual exhaust outlets (quad exhaust outlets optional), projector headlamps, flash 18-inch (Calais) or 19-inch (Calais V-Series) alloys, leather appointed seats (electronically adjustable and with memory) and a leather wrapped gearstick and steering wheel. Also standard on the Luxury range of Holden Commodores is a trip computer with a triple display that includes: instantaneous average fuel consumption, average speed, a digital speedometer, distance/time to go, fuel used/range, an odometer/tripmeter/trip time, and a visual and audible speed warning feature.
The Holden Commodore Calais V-Series is the only Commodore to be equipped with rain sensoring wipers, heated exterior mirrors with ‘puddle’ lamps and position memory, an automatic mirror that dips when reverse gear is selected, front park assist, an eight-way electric adjustment of the driver’s seat with three-position memory, a front centre armrest with leather trim and door entry lamps. Both the Calais models have as optional extras, fitting of an overhead rear DVD player. Kids love this feature.
You can enter the Calais and Calais V-Series Commodores without even having to use the door key inserts. A special priority flip key will do it for you. The remote control priority key operates the central locking, interior lighting, has a time delay, automatic illumination when the engine is turned off, operates exterior lamps, enables/disables alarm system, unlocks the boot, and disables the remote boot release button in the glovebox when locking up the car. A clever beep on the horn sounds if the front door is ajar when remote locking, and the Calais and Calais V-Series both have a comprehensive alarm system.
If you want maximum power, the Holden Commodore Calais V-Series can be fitted with the 260 kW, 6.0-litre Generation IV Alloy V8 engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and a silky 6-speed automatic transmission with Active Select. Now this is a premium engine that is exceptionally powerful and incredibly addictive to drive. You have been warned!
Standard fitting, for both the Calais and Calais V-Series, is with the 210 kW, 3.6 litre SIDI Direct Injection V6 engine. The same silky 6-speed automatic is used for applying the power to the rear wheels, and also comes with Active Select. Don’t sneeze at this engine. These cars accelerate very smoothly and have ample levels of torque. Performance is very good, making the decision that little bit harder to jump up to the big V8.
As you would expect, both the Holden Commodore Calais and Calais V-Series are very safe cars. The large sedan has a great environment to transport the family about. Electronic Stability Control (ESC), an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Brake Assist (EBA) and a Traction Control System (TCS) are standard features. Comprehensive airbag protection is standard, and the car has performed well in the recent crash tests, resulting in a 5-star ANCAP safety rating.
Proudly built in Australia for Australian conditions, it’s little wonder that the Holden Commodore Luxury range has superior cars for long, intercity journeys. Few cars can match the refinement, comfort and space that the Calais and Calais V-Series provide for the same amount of money. Book yourself a drive, today.
