I’m sure you may have noticed the new Volvo C70 gliding past… swiftly. Exclusively styled, the Volvo C70 has a brilliant design that is hard not to notice. Being a hard-top cabriolet, the C70 tucks the three-piece roof away in a matter of seconds to become a first class open-top tourer.
At the push of a button the roof slips away from sight, but also the side windows move into position for protecting an environment inside the Volvo C70 that is unruffled by dominant wind drafts. Sit back in some of the nicest electronic leather seats that you’ll ever experience, and the journey will be luxurious and effortless. Gliding along the tarmac in a cocooned, sun-kissed, Swedish accentuated leather suite is an experience that needs to be understood first hand because Volvo does this better than most luxury car makers.
There are two Volvo C70 model variants. The Volvo T5 S boasts a great flavour of luxury and sport items. 17-inch alloy wheels, front and rear fog lamps, keyless entry, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, eight-way power front seats, driver memory functions, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a trip computer, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and an eight-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, HD radio, an iPod/USB audio interface and an auxiliary audio jack give every indication that the Volvo C70 is made for your pleasure in mind.
In addition to the Volvo C70 T5 S spec, the Volvo C70 T5 version adds a lovely set of 18-inch Midir diamond cut alloy wheels, a full leather interior with electrically adjustable driver and front passenger seats, a high output premium sound system, rain sensor wipers, heated front seats and active bending lights that can be cleaned with an automatic headlight wash system.
Always a Volvo strong point; the beautiful 2012 Volvo C70 comes standard with antilock disc brakes and brake assist, stability and traction control, front-seat-mounted side airbags, front seat side curtain-style airbags, automatically deploying roll bars and whiplash-reducing active front head restraints. Volvo continues to lead the way forward in the area of safety. There are some excellent technology systems, like the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and the pedestrian protection system that both seek to prevent accidents from occurring in the first place.
Can you imagine Mum dropping the kids off to school in a Volvo C70? The kids will be stoked. Volvos do have a special luxury status in Australia that has been well respected for numerous decades. Rear seat legroom in a C70 is reasonable for adults, while the kids will have no hassles at all. Hip room is good, with 1350 mm available across the back seat. The Volvo C70 has a better volume of space in the boot than its rivals do with the roof retracted, so swinging the bags into the boot with the top retracted is all good. Pressing the trunk-mounted Load Assist button lifts the roof assembly to make accessing the remaining space easier.
At pace on the open road the Volvo C70 is quiet and controlled. Even with the top down, the cabin space remains fairly well protected from gusts of wind. Power from the T5 engine is lusty and addictive. With 169 kW, the 2.5-litre, five-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine goes about its business with an assertiveness more associated with six or eight cylinder cars. Maximum torque of 320 Nm is available from just 1500 rpm, and the suave five-speed automatic Volvo C70 can cut the tape for the 0-100 km/h acceleration in 8.0 seconds.
Being this desirable does have a price to pay; and Volvo realises this. An engine immobiliser and theft-protected locks come as standard features on both Volvo C70 T5 S and T5 versions. Still, the Volvo C70 is a lot cheaper than a BMW or Audi equivalent.
