By now, you have probably noticed the gorgeous little Volvo C30 travelling on Australian roads. Hidden in the C30 line-up is one of the best road masters around.
Let’s think diesels for a moment. Diesels are the way the automotive world is heading. It makes sense, really. Fuel efficiency, high torque levels and strong build quality make the diesel engine the way forward. When applying the power of a diesel engine, and its fuel efficient trend, there is little sense in the petrol powered alternative, these days.
Volvo has made a clear statement with their new Volvo C30 D5. The engine boasts 134 kW, which in itself is quite a remarkable output. The 2.4 litre motor has a significant maximum torque of 320 Nm, and when the engine reaches 1800 rpm the turbo thrust is vigorous. The sort of performance ensures that this comfortable coupe can accelerate from a standstill in a brisk eight seconds. Sure footed handling and a rock solid composure on the road makes for a superb driving feel – particularly at high speed. Power is delivered instantaneously and the engine feels almost V6 “petrolish” – if there was ever such a word. The super handling package is thanks to a sophisticated suspension layout that has stiffer stabiliser bars plus new rear shock absorbers and springs. A Sport variant C30 has an even lower ride height.
A side-on-view reveals a curvy hatch body that is highlighted with a tall and muscly looking waistline. This line tapers towards the tailgate. The Volvo shows off a very unique, and smart looking, tail-light formation that climbs up the C-pillar. This has to be the hottest looking hatch design around in my book. Be sure to check the Volvo C30 out before looking to any other car marque for your next hatchback buy.
The very comfortable interior is dedicated to providing superb room and occupant space for four long-legged adults. To travel in a car of this class provides an experience that is almost limo-like in the rear. The rate at which the ground is covered in the swift C30 D5 may suggest otherwise however. To enter the rear seating a dinky switch slides the front seats forward giving you a kinglike entry. A useful 233 litres of luggage space is located in the boot which, of course, becomes cavernous when the rear seats are dropped forward.
The Volvo C30 D5 is packed with luxury items. A nice sound system – which can be upgraded, Textile T-Tec upholstery upgraded to leather, AC Climate control with Electronic Climate Control stabilisation, cruise control, heated exterior mirrors, a leather clad steering wheel – I tell you the C30 is very tasty. A few extras can be thrown into the mix to really finish off the Volvo C30 D5. Bi-Xenon headlights, a first aid kit, keyless drive, a remote alarm, powered and heated seats, a glass sunroof, a blind-spot information system and a rain sensor are some of the best options.
This is a car that would look just right up my driveway. How about yours? This one’s a real beauty: silky and tender, vivacious and athletic, safe and masterful. The Volvo C30 D5. Simply breathtaking.
