Safety isn’t the only thing that the Volvo S40 T5 masters. The medium-sized vehicle is also blisteringly quick. Nice lines, a sport tuned suspension and a beautiful interior make the S40 T5 become a very desirable car.
Under the bonnet is plenty of muscle. A very healthy 169 kW is at the ready – and all from creamy, low engine revs. There is plenty to smile about when driving the Volvo S40 T5. This is the pacy version of the S40 line-up, and without a doubt, it is a quick car. Out of town and underway, you can experience some scintillating performance. The source of the T5’s power is an all-alloy in-line five-cylinder 2.5 litre unit with four valves per cylinder, twin overhead camshafts featuring CVVT variable camshaft control and a light-pressure turbo to generate 169 kW at 5000 rpm. Torque is exceptional, and the pull of the 320 Nm of torque is available from a very low 1500 rpm all the way through to 4800 rpm – which ensures impressive thrust and hefty passing ability. It only takes an enthusiastic driver to experience the engine’s full potential and find out that the S40 T5 can hit 100 km/h from a standstill in under seven seconds! The nicely muted but beautifully audible growl from the engine sings over 3000 rpm.
Volvo have always known how to make their cars comfortable to drive. Inside the Volvo S40 T5, seating serves up a lot of style, comfort and refinement. A wide range of height/reach steering column adjustment, and a full range of electric seat adjustment ensures that any driver can feel at home behind the wheel. Simple switchgear and a lack of fiddlies make the Volvo S40 T5 a relaxing traveller. Everything the driver needs to know or control is at hand in ergonomical efficiency. Travelling at night is enjoyable and relaxing, particularly with the pleasant diffused light that is displayed throughout the cabin. Volvo has done exceptionally well with impressively assembled high quality materials. Sumptuous leather and an attractive one-piece centre facia panel glides down to the gearshift lever. Mounted neatly on this thin, shapely, polished aluminium band is the major switchgear for the hi-fi, climate control, integrated telephone and the satellite navigation. A very cleverly designed dual-zone climate control unit is the best around. And let’s not overlook the other half’s favourite: the wonderful heated front seats – oh so nice! Standard equipment is good with electric windows, power adjustable and heated door mirrors, tinted glass, power driver’s seat with memory, cruise control, audio and cruise control switches on the nicely grippy, three-spoke leather-covered steering wheel, a driver’s information centre, exterior temperature gauge, dual-zone electronic climate control with an air quality system and pollen filter, leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and a high-quality sound system with 8 speakers, a 4 x 40watt amplifier and a six-disc CD/Radio. You’ll also get four lovely 18-inch alloys, rain-sensing wipers and, of course, a very comprehensive set of safety equipment. The S40 T5 might be scorchingly fast, but it’s still a Volvo – which means superbly safe.
There’s certainly no lack of space, and the Volvo S40 T5 offers relaxed and roomy accommodation for five adults. With the rear seats in place, there’s a handy 404 litres of luggage space in the boot. Once the rear seats are flipped down, a very large and practical load capacity becomes very evident. You have a completely flat load floor. A lot of storage space, via some very well placed storage compartments, enables the Volvo S40 to be a family friendly option.
This is a highly recommended machine. Swift, safe, fuel efficient and superbly comfortable. Take a look.
