Some of the most beautiful car seats I’ve ever enjoyed were found in a new Audi S4 Avant. The rich-red and black leather seats were sculptured to fit the human body and had so much style and grabbing design. I guess the interior of a car like the S4 Avant has to be every bit as good as the splendid low-slung profile of the car’s exterior.
My first impressions of the Audi S4 Avant were right away a whole heap of positive vibes. There is no doubting the muscly, yet mildly conservative, styling of the car should please most. The deep front air dam houses some large trapezium-shaped air intakes which also house the extra set of driving lights. Smooth lines and curves sweep all over the S4 Avant’s bodywork ensuring a silent ride as the car slips fluently through the air. Quad chrome exhaust pipes and a boot lid spoiler finish off the rear of the car, while big 18-inch alloys come as standard. Personally, I love the 19-inch, Audi exclusive, five arm rotor design. These babies are shod with 255/35 tyres for smoking up the tarmac.
An impeccable fit-and-finish with premium materials make the stylish Audi S4 Avant’s interior a breath-taking sanctuary. Touches of chrome trimming against vivid black surfaces offer a striking appearance, and a large high-definition screen sits in the centre of the dash to display many different bits of information about the car, your progress, where you are in the world, temperature, on-board entertainment systems and your contact with people many miles away from your serene Audi S4 world. There are a huge number of features that appear on the Audi S4 Avant almanac: hands-free communication, surround sound audio, electric seats with a heating function, power windows, climate control, Lane Assist, Quattro road holding and, of course, the potent 3.0 TFSI engine that boasts a hugely responsive 245 kW. The power is put through a performance S tronic transmission so that you can access the power instantaneously throughout the engine’s revolution range.
Like a fast pace musical piece, the Audi S4 Avant can fox trot its way through city traffic and then dance through slow moving traffic to blast along the open road with so much power. A genuinely fast car, the Audi S4 Avant has 440 Nm of torque that just loves pulling anywhere from low through to the high rpm. This sort of flexibility enables the S4 Avant to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in a short, sharp 5.0 seconds, before hitting an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h. With clever fuel saving technology, owners can expect to average under 9.0 litres/100 km.
Massive levels of Quattro grip provide huge amounts of fun. A very controlled and balanced chassis take road holding to a new level. If you haven’t experienced the thrill of the Audi Quattro system working in one of the “S” Audi cars, then do make sure you try one because they add a new dimension to the words “road holding”. RWD sports cars struggle to catch Quattro cars as soon as the surface gets a smidgeon slippery. Audi has provided the face lifted new Audi S4 Avant with a revised suspension and a new power steering system. Because the power steering requires little energy for straight-ahead motion, fuel consumption has dropped by up to 0.3 litres/100 km.
The Audi S4 Sedan competes directly with BMW’s 335i M Sport, Mitsubishi’s Evo, the WRX and the Mercedes Benz C350. Sometimes, for something as good as the S4 Avant, you have to pay for it. One thing the S4 does have from any rival is plenty of respect.
The current Audi S4 Avant models include the:
